At 3:00 AM hundreds are sound asleep in their beds while the dedicated members of the Mount Tabor Fire Department respond to an emergency call for help.  If you have wanted to be a part of it but just don't know how to do it; here are the steps to becoming a firefighter with us.

  • For full membership be over the age of 18, Junior squad 16 years old with parental consent

  • Stop by the Tarn Drive Firehouse on any Thursday night between 7 and 10 PM and ask to speak with an officer about joining or fill out the form at the end of the page to set up an appointment

  • The officer will explain more in depth about the service we offer and the process to becoming a full member

If you are still interested and want to apply for membership these are the following steps:

  • Fill out and return an application form after taking a no-charge physical with the department Physician

  • After returning the application it will be brought up at the monthly general meeting then you can start on your probationary term

  • during your first six months you will be on probation and the following is expected of you

    • Attend six monthly probationary drills

    • Attend as many Thursday night meetings as possible

    • Participate in all department activities, weekly truck maintenance, special drills and functions

  • After six months your application will brought up to the department and by vote you will be accepted or denied full membership

  • If you have been accepted for full membership you will have one year to complete Firefighter One at the Morris County Firefighters and Police Training academy

While this should be a good idea of what it takes, more will be explained in person to help you make the decision and find out if this is right for you.

It should be fully understood that MTFD is not a social club, and we do not seek the application of persons looking for a social club.  This department was made on the solid commitment of the charter members to provide professional emergency services to our community.   Exceptional professionalism is expected from all members at all times.
